Ten feet long, three of a crew, all timber, no bouyancy, gaff-rigged, multi part spinnaker poles with no topping lift. Capsize and class rules state you’re out of the race. When a squall comes through at 20-25 kts+, and you’r rigged for 15kts, chances are you’re in for a helluva ride.
I’m the for’ard hand in this YouTube video from March 2012, Heat 3 of the Australian Historical 10ft Skiff Championships on the Brisbane River. Nine boats started, four finished (including one that broke their gaff). One broke their bumpkin, many just got blown over in the stronger gusts.
Enjoy the ride as seen from the end of the boom.
